For the first time, I will display the small-scale, plein air paintings from my monthlong stay in 2019 in the charming hilltop village of Montepulciano in Tuscany, Italy. These will be rounded out by some additional views from a 2-week residency during 2017 in another, even smaller village of Montecastello di Vibio in Umbria.
The many extremely steep side streets of Montepulciano afforded a surprising variety of views and the opportunity to escape from wine-loving tourists. I painted outside every weekday morning and almost every afternoon. My legs were very tired by the time I got home!

Malls of America: Phillip Buehler and Karen Mainenti
Considered mere eyesores today, the first suburban shopping malls were examples of exemplary design: innovative civic architecture created to foster a sense of shared community. Against the background of the recent rezoning of the Gowanus neighborhood, this exhibition explores the optimism of urban planning against the eventual decline of these utopian dreams.
