Brooklyn Around the Edges - Group Exhibit

  • FGD Gallery 535 6th Avenue Brooklyn, NY, 11215 United States (map)

Gallery hours: Friday, 2-5; Saturday & Sunday, 12-5; and by appointment (email kgormandavis@yahoo.com)

This group of four Brooklyn-based artists will be showing a variety of artwork that reflects their aesthetic response to the post-industrial communities in which they find inspiration. Rather than the well-known picturesque charm of Brooklyn brownstones, their gardens or nearby parks, these artists consider how aspects of “fringe” neighborhoods - Red Hook, Brooklyn Navy Yard, Gowanus - are being re-purposed or have evolved in recent times. The artists include: Jim Ebersole, Elaine Komorowski, Elizabeth Yamin, and Ella Yang. Curated by Katherine Davis, an artist herself, there will be representational as well as abstract pieces.

My paintings selected for this exhibition are as follows:

Painting of two former power plant smokestacks with BQE in distant background, dramatic clouds in large expanse of sky

Former Power Plants, Sunset Park, oil on canvas, 18” x 24”

Painting of Brooklyn Queens Expressway (or Gowanus Expressway), overpass crossing a street with warehouse and commercial buildings, delivery man on a bicycle, and blank billboard in background

BQE Overpass in Gowanus, oil on canvas, 12” x 16”

Painting of Gowanus Canal near Carroll Street Bridge, with wooden pilings in foreground, bright blue water

Pilings by Bridge, oil on canvas, 20” x 16”
