This exhibition of a dozen paintings is on the theme of Verdant Oasis – My Brooklyn Botanic Garden. All of the paintings were inspired by this incredible urban collection of plants and thematic gardens, and over half of them were painted “en plein air”, i.e. on-site at specific garden areas, such as the Native Flora Garden, Water Garden, and Cranston Rose Garden. As a long-time member of the Brooklyn Botanic Garden and an avid gardener myself, I have come to know the different gardens well. The Lily Pool Terrace, in particular, has been a source of images for many years. I have painted a large number of paintings showcasing the many varieties of water-lilies cultivated in the serene reflecting pools, and the reflections of the trees surrounding the pools have become major motifs in most of these paintings. The BBG offers a relatively tranquil place to pause, settle my mind, and find patterns and colors compelling enough to paint, all while enjoying an excessive amount of greenery.
Many thanks to Natalie Fisk, Creative Liaison for IC Hotels, for orchestrating this exhibit, and of course to NU Hotel, a boutique hotel in downtown Brooklyn that “draws inspiration from the creative energy of the borough’s thriving art scene.” In other words, they are a great supporter of local artists in their backyard!
