I am very excited to announce that my painting, “Brooklyn’s Favorite (Cement Factory),” was selected to be in the popular group exhibit, the annual Small Works Show at 440 Gallery. This year’s curator, Grace R. Freedman , is Managing Director and co-Founder of Why Not Art?, an organization whose mission is to celebrate art and artists by building community support and connection for all.

440 Gallery is an artist-run space in Park Slope, Brooklyn, dedicated to the creation, exhibition and sale of a wide range of work. 440 Gallery also invites outside artists and curators to participate in seasonal group shows. Since 2005, the gallery has facilitated a lively cultural exchange within its Brooklyn neighborhood, and the artistic community at large.

All the artworks are no larger than 12” and might make wonderful holiday gifts!

Statement from 440 Gallery:

Creativity and innovation vie for space at 440 Gallery during the 19th Annual Small Works Show, a winter favorite of gallery followers and art collectors alike. Grace R. Freedman, Ph.D., our juror for this show, thoughtfully curated a collection of 83 works that were chosen from over 575 artists who submitted pieces as part of a national call-for-art this fall. Measuring no more than 12 inches in all dimensions, each artwork showcases the idea that size does indeed matter! Included in the exhibit are works of classic as well as non-traditional painting and sculpture, photography and digital works, and more than a few unexpected surprises.

Several awards will be presented to artists participating in the show, including the Jim Manwell Memorial Award, selected by the artist-members of the gallery; the People's Choice Award, voted on by the gallery's visitors; and the Juror's Choice Award, chosen by Freedman.

“My vision for this show was to select fine artwork that highlighted the many ways that artists approach a small-size format,” explains Freedman. “I was so excited to see the breadth of creativity in this year’s submissions. The artwork represented a wide range of diverse materials and styles – paintings (figurative and abstract), drawings, collage, textile work, sculpture and mixed media. While my job as juror was challenging, this makes for a very robust show of small works that are vibrant, interesting and affordable for art collectors.”

Atlantic Avenue Artwalk Group Exhibit

Opening weekend: October 17 & 18
In the windows of 472 Atlantic Avenue, Brooklyn

This group exhibit, curated by curated by Arts Gowanus Executive Director Johnny Thornton, guest curators Clémence Mailly and Yvena Despagne, will be presented in the windows of 472 Atlantic Avenue and totally visible from the street/sidewalk. I plan to be there to meet and greet (aka loiter on the sidewalk!) opening weekend from around 2-5 pm each day. Artwork will be in the windows, not indoors.

The three paintings below, representing distinct bodies of work, have been selected to be included in this exhibit.

This exhibit is a small part of a large-scale, self-guided art walk that will include photography, paintings, drawings, sculpture, and installations, at more than 65 storefronts, outdoor dining areas, medical offices, and public spaces along Atlantic Avenue, between Fourth Avenue and the waterfront.

The majority of art will be exhibited outside and in windows, easily viewed from the street for COVID safety sake.

Arts Gowanus teamed up with Atlantic Avenue LDC and Atlantic Avenue BID to present this socially distanced ArtWalk for you to see art, rediscover the merchants on the avenue, and celebrate the community. More details, including list of artists and locations are HERE at ArtsGowanus.org. Wear your most creative mask and enjoy!

Summer Sun! - Group Exhibit (online)

ArtinRes.com invites you to their virtual curatorial space, The Weekly Curation, where selected artworks from the Art In Res artist community are highlighted and exhibited together. This week's selection, Summer Sun, promotes artworks that celebrate the vibrancy of summer months. Curator and artist Mel Reese brings together pieces to emulate the height of the season: "Summer means something different to all of us, from long summer vacations, long afternoons spent on the couch, or evenings wandering our suburban neighborhoods, heat rising from the cement. For some, there is vibrancy and energy, for others lethargy and inertia. But the one thing that’s universal is the heat."

You just might find your summer happy place! Visit the entire group exhibit and “installations” here: https://artinres.com/articles/the-weekly-curation-summer-sun

My featured painting is positioned in a bedroom! Where would you put it?
