"Garfield Place" Accepted to prestigious 126th Annual Member Exhibition at Salmagundi Club

After much indecision about which painting to submit to this premier annual event, I was swayed by my Facebook fans, who voted for Early Evening on Garfield Place! It is a large painting with a gorgeous frame, and sure enough it was accepted.  Now, we'll see if it won any awards!  The exhibition is up from now until Friday, November 27, open to the public daily 1-6 PM.

The Salmagundi Club is located at 47 Fifth Avenue @ 12th Street, NYC.

In/Sight=On/Site opens this Sat, May 30

Please join me and Mary K. Connelly as we open our exhibition this Saturday, May 30, at the Salmagundi Club in their Patrons' Gallery. We'll both be there all afternoon, 1-6 pm.  We'll be showing mostly small works: Mary's interiors are intensely colored and are incredibly evocative; I'll be showing recent street views from Brooklyn and Manhattan, as well as a few landscapes of Block Island and Cape Cod. The show will run through Thursday, June 11, with general hours being Wed - Sun, 1-6 pm, and Thursdays, 1-8 pm. We'll be taking turns gallery-sitting.  Contact me if you'd like to know when I'm there! Located at 47 Fifth Ave, at 12th St, it will also be convenient to head over to the Annual Washington Square Outdoor Art Exhibit.Postcard front[250]

New paintings underway for upcoming exhibition

Well, it's not as if I don't have plenty of paintings, but I feel motivated to paint a few more for my upcoming exhibition: In/Sight=On/Site, Recent Paintings with Mary K. Connelly. We'll be showing at the Salmagundi Club in the Patrons' Gallery, a lovely newly renovated space on the second floor, from May 30 through June 11, 2009. Mark your calendars for the Opening Reception on Saturday, May 30, 3-6 pm and the Closing Reception on Thursday, June 11, 6-8 pm.  Mary and I met at the the Vermont Studio Center during an artist residency program in 2006. We found that we have complementary takes on our approaches to painting.  Her intimate, small-scale interiors and my cityscapes and landscapes speak to our shared Love of Place.  Mary will be coming from Denver, CO, for this show. postcard-front250 I'll post some of my new work soon!

Spring Auction Alternative!

I decided to go ahead and create an alternative auction for one of the paintings rejected by the Salmagundi Club (see entry below) on eBay.  The auction for "Drizzly Morning Downtown" will start this Thursday, March 19, at noon EST, and end on Sunday, March 22, at noon EST. The starting bid is $250 just as it would have been at the Salmagundi. If this goes well, I may try another. Looks like I may be starting my own "Salon des Refusés"! drizzly_morning_downtown_150

SCNY Spring Auctions coming soon!

I dropped off my three painting submissions for the upcoming Spring Art Auctions at the Salmagundi Club. On three Friday evenings, March 13, 20, and 27 @ 8:00 PM, auctioneers will take bids for artwork submitted by Club members. Part of the proceeds will go towards the funding of the Club's offerings: exhibitions, lectures, Artist Roundtables, music performances, etc.  Bids start remarkably low: $250 for original paintings, $150 for photography and graphics, $400 for sculptures. I'll know on Monday which (if not all 3!) of my paintings are accepted by the jury. The auctions are open to the public; I'm planning to be there on the 20th & 27th. Enthusiastic crowd at last night's exhibition reception

There must have been well over 200 people attending yesterday evening's reception and award ceremony for the "Contemporary NY Waterways" and "History Panorama" exhibition at the Salmagundi Club. It was one of the swankiest receptions I've attended there with a jazz trio, hot appetizers being passed by white-uniformed waiters, not to mention the usual wine and cheese. I got a lot of questions about "Lehigh Valley Barge at Red Hook" (image of it is in an entry below) - where is it docked exactly, how is it used today (it's now the Waterfront Museum); and a couple of people offered historical information about how barges were an important part of NYC history way back when.  All this in celebration of the Dutch discovery of Manhattan 400 years ago!

"Become a Savvy Art Collector"

Last night's panel discussion at the Salmagundi Club, "Become a Savvy Art Collector" was informative, fun, and inspiring. Our moderator, Peter Trippi of Fine Art Connoisseur Magazine, kept the conversation flowing with questions that brought out the different perspectives and experiences of the panelists: Kathryn Markel, owner of Markel Fine Arts Gallery in Chelsea; Betty Levin, an art consultant who runs Corporate Art Directions in NYC; Tim Newton, an avid collector of representational fine art from Long Island; and me, the artist.  Some advice that was given: buy art you love, but shop around to make sure the price seems right; shopping around (and training your eye/figuring out your taste) can mean visiting galleries, art fairs, artist studio tours, museums, looking at art magazines and catalogues, and surfing the Internet; if you're going to be serious about collecting set up an annual budget and then decide whether you will buy several or one each year; warnings against giclee prints (= posters!); be sure that your advisor, dealer or consultant is as unbiased as possible. And more!! You should have been there. gallerypeople
